Global Smartphone Sales up 74% Since Last Year [Study]

Global smartphone saless over the course of 2010 rose 74% from 2009, totaling 302.6 million. 54% of Verizon Android and BlackBerry Users Switching to iPhone [Study]

In a a recent survey of 700 Verizon smartphone owners by uSamp, 54% of those currently owning either a BlackBerry or an Android phone said they were at least “somewhat likely” to switch to an iPhone 4 next week . 25% were “very likely”. In-Stat: There will be almost 139 million mobile VoIP users by 2014

With more and more people using VoIP and social networking services from their mobile phones, In-Stat forecasts there will be nearly 139 million mobile VoIP users by 2014. Social networking services and a growing number of smartphone users will especially drive people to use such services, plus there’s the obvious benefit of saving money on phone calls. U.S. Smartphone Penetration Highest Among Hispanics, Asians [Study]

In a survey cross-referencing smartphone use with ethnicity, Nielsen found that Hispanics and Asians were the most likely to own a smartphone (45% each), followed by African-Americans (33%) and finally Caucasians (27%).  In terms of those recently buying handsets, Asians have been buying the most of the last six months (60%), then Hispanics (56%), African Americans (44%), and Caucasians (42%). BlackBerry 2010 Sales Beat iPhone in UK

While BlackBerry may be quickly losing ground to the competition here in North America (and worldwide, for that matter ), they’re still doing fine in the UK, according to a recent study by GfK Group. More People Looking to Buy Windows Phone than BlackBerry [Study]

A recent study by ChangeWave examined trends in mobile operating system preferences, and showed that 5% of respondents would prefer to buy a Windows Phone, versus 4% who wanted a BlackBerry. Of course, the difference between the two is negligible when the iPhone OS and Android took up 36% and 35% respectively, but it does say something bad about RIM’s momentum in the grand scheme of smartphones.
