 Jorma Ollila (pictured above, orange tie) isn’t a name that’s familiar to most folks, but it should be. He was Nokia’s CEO between 1992 and 2006, otherwise known as the years when a small Finnish company known for making cables transformed itself into the world’s largest mobile phone maker.  MasterCard is widening the universe of phones that officially support PayPass in a big way, with a new MasterCard PayPass Ready program certifying that devices with NFC will play nicely with its mobile payment system. A total of 17 phones are part of the first wave getting the official A-OK.  Reuters is reporting that Nokia is exploring selling the Vertu phone line to holding company Permira for $264.26 million, freeing itself from the difficult process of selling phones no one wants to people who should know better.  Following news of the first successful white space trials in Cambridge, UK, Nokia is now touting its research in the area with a demonstration of location-based services for the unlicensed spectrum. Traditionally, proponents of white space usage have positioned this unused portion of the airwaves as a viable, low-cost method of data transmission, but the Nokia folks have now demonstrated its ability to pinpoint one’s location with much greater accuracy than either WiFi or cellular networks.
