Bell Mobility follows T-Mobile, AT&T’s lead; 3G network now to be called ’4G’

Despite the fact that Canadian wireless provider Bell Mobility will be rolling out LTE in the near future, it — like many of its peers — has decided to play the name game when it comes to “4G.” In an internal memo to employees, Bell explains that its high-speed HSPA+ network will henceforth be known as 4G. “Given the significant improvements in performance and quality the wireless carriers have made to their networks, the ITU has reassessed the definition of 4G standards,” reads the note. “This re-classification allows Bell to promote the HSPA+ network as 4G.” The changes take effect today, though there’s no word on how Bell’s marketing department will differentiate its 4G LTE network from its 4G HSPA network . . . → Read More: Bell Mobility follows T-Mobile, AT&T’s lead; 3G network now to be called ’4G’

ASUS Eee Pad MeMO and MeMic hands-on (video)

Image asus-memic-cebit-12-sm.jpg

Though we played with ASUS’ Android-powered Eee Pad MeMO back at CES, the company spilled a couple new secrets here at CeBIT today: first, it’ll be running Honeycomb by the time it launches in June — current prototypes are running Gingerbread — and second, certain MeMO bundles will include the MeMic, a separate Bluetooth handset that lets you take calls without holding a giant tablet to your face (it’s pronounced “me-mike,” by the way). Interestingly, the MeMic features a translucent LCD that we’re told will make it to the production units; unfortunately, the units on display were running very early alpha software that had “given out” by the time we arrived at the booth, so we couldn’t get a sense of viewability . . . → Read More: ASUS Eee Pad MeMO and MeMic hands-on (video)

Verizon is once again reminding their employees and family members to put the customers first and refrain from buying a Verizon iPhone themselves, at least for the time being. An email memo sent out today to all employees says: Focus on Customer Is Key to Verizon iPhone Launch To help ensure we meet customer demand for iPhones, Verizon is urging employees and their families to postpone purchases of the popular smartphone, whether online or in retail stores, for the time being. “Customers and non-customers alike have waited for years to see this product on America’s most reliable wireless network,” notes Verizon Wireless Chief Operating Officer John Stratton. . . . → Read More: Verizon employees and family members being asked not to buy Verizon iPhone
