Rough news for RIM: Apple’s iPad 2 will launch a month before the PlayBook

Image ipad-2-2110302195259.jpg

Though not entirely unexpected, it turns out Apple’s second-generation iPad tablet will be released before the BlackBerry PlayBook hits store shelves in April. This could be a crushing blow to RIM and its PlayBook, which has already fallen under heavy scrutiny for not measuring up to Apple’s iOS offering according to bloggers, analysts and members of the press who have spent time with the tablet. Apple on Wednesday announced that its new iPad 2 will become available in stores and online beginning March 11th , a full month before the PlayBook is expected to launch on April 10th . . . . → Read More: Rough news for RIM: Apple’s iPad 2 will launch a month before the PlayBook

RIM Defends BlackBerry PlayBook’s Similarities with webOS

Image PlayBook-vs-TouchPad.jpg

When RIM announced the BlackBerry PlayBook , it was easy to see the similarities with Palm’s webOS – gesture areas, thumbnailed multitasking, and upward flicks to close apps were all conspicuously familiar. RIM evolved the idea in a few ways, like by throwing a gesture area around all sides of the screen, and adding a few new gestures to summon the keyboard and app menu. When asked about the PlayBook’s user interface, HP’s director of product marketing Jon Oakes said: “From what we’ve seen in the market, there are some uncanny similarities . . . → Read More: RIM Defends BlackBerry PlayBook’s Similarities with webOS

RIM Reminds us BlackBerry PlayBook was “Built for CIOs with CIOs”

Image BlackBerry-PlayBook-CIOs.jpg

Since its announcement, RIM has been touting the BlackBerry PlayBook as the one and only enterprise-ready tablet, and to further emphasize the point they’ve released a video talking in vague terms about how awesome and secure the thing is. The key phrase in the video is that the PlayBook was “Built for CIOs with CIOs” (Chief Information Officers, the dudes at companies who are in charge of how corporate e-mail is handled). Need for Speed is preloaded on there , which strikes me as sending mixed signals about how RIM is trying to position the PlayBook in the consumer versus enterprise sense; it’s as if they’re pitching two different products altogether. . . . → Read More: RIM Reminds us BlackBerry PlayBook was “Built for CIOs with CIOs”

PlayBook Android app support mentioned during demo at MWC, old BlackBerrys show up in ShopSavvy’s Android logs

Image flurry-bb-8600-shopsavvy-android.jpg

As far-fetched as it may seem, rumors that RIM is working on some sort of Android app support for its QNX-based PlayBook tablet have persisted in various forms for months now — and they’ve turned up once again in a video posted by development community MobileMonday’s Rio chapter taken at MWC earlier this month, where a RIM rep seemingly says “we will also support Android apps” after talking about Java-based offerings. Of course, this could’ve been staged by some rabble rousers or a rep could’ve simply been echoing back the rumors he’s seen on the interwebs — but regardless, it adds fuel to the fire. Follow the break to see the video of that . . . → Read More: PlayBook Android app support mentioned during demo at MWC, old BlackBerrys show up in ShopSavvy’s Android logs

BlackBerry PlayBook will support Android apps, RIM rep proclaims [video]

Image playbook.jpeg

BGR exclusively reported in January that Research in Motion was hard at work trying to add support for Android applications to the BlackBerry PlayBook and its QNX-based OS. The move would be a major one, as access to the second-largest mobile development ecosystem would give RIM’s new platform a huge jump in the all-important app game. Since our initial exclusive report, we’ve seen strikingly similar claims emerge as well as purported news of an Android app running on multiple BlackBerry smartphones . . . . → Read More: BlackBerry PlayBook will support Android apps, RIM rep proclaims [video]

Angry Farm for BlackBerry Appeases Bird-Flinging Demographic

Image BlackBerry-AngryFarm-660x366.png

If you thought this was how Angry Birds would look like if it ever made the leap to BlackBerry , guess again. Smarter Apps has released an unabashed knock-off called Angry Farm, where, like the original, you aim and slingshot various animals at precariously-constructed buildings in an effort to collapse everything on top of the hapless victims inside. Each farm animal behaves differently when being flung through the air, so you have to aim appropriately depending on whose turn it is . . . → Read More: Angry Farm for BlackBerry Appeases Bird-Flinging Demographic
