It’s the last day of school and all of the youngster's eyes are glued to clock above the blackboard; waiting for that final cue to be released from their teachers grasp. As they wriggle in their chairs, biting on pencils, and twirl their hair with their fingers an old nursery rhyme slips in their precocious minds: No more school, no more books . No more teachers dirty looks. . . . → Read More: webOS Travel Apps

From Disrupt NY To A $43 Million Skype Acquisition, GroupMe Tells All

Image groupme_logo.png

They have raised $11.45 million in both Angel and Series B funding since launch, acquired a company called Sensobi, and have been themselves acquired by none other than Skype (which was acquired by Microsoft). There may not be a wilder tale of a Disrupt success (though plenty of startups would beg to differ), which is why we’ve chosen GroupMe to kick off a series I’m doing on “Disrupt Startups: Where They Are Now.” We sat down earlier today to chat with co-founders Jared Hecht and Steve Martocci to find out their perspective on Disrupt as a launchpad. . . . → Read More: From Disrupt NY To A $43 Million Skype Acquisition, GroupMe Tells All

App Review: QuickChat for Facebook

Image tablet2.png

Despite deep Synergy integration between webOS and Facebook in the Contacts, Calendar, Photos and Videos apps, we have yet to see Facebook Chat make its way to the Messaging app without the benefit of any homebrew assistance . Although there are a few instant messaging apps in the App Catalog that includes Facebook Chat, none have the ease and simplicity of QuickChat for Facebook , by pcworldSoftware, nor are any of them built using Enyo to support both the small screens of webOS phones and the larger real estate of the TouchPad. Back in September, Jon Tirsen and Douwe Osinga, two ex-Googlers, unveiled their new mobile travel guide, Triposo , setting out to do for travel content what Google and PageRank did for search. The startup developed a set of algorithms to crawl and parse the Web’s biggest travel information databases (like Wikitravel and Open Street Maps), before ranking the data to determine which pieces have the most relevance to its users and serving them up as rich travel guides. . . . → Read More: Triposo’s Mobile Travel Guide Now Actively Recommends Your Next Destination; CrunchFund Invests
