Windows Phone Overtakes BlackBerry for Third Position

The battle for the most operating system used in smartphones is always exciting, at least from an Apple iOS versus Google’s Android standpoint, but then comes a big “yawn” for third place. According to the latest International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker…that must take up the entire business card…during 1Q2013, Android vendors and Apple shipped 199.5 million units worldwide, up 59.1-percent from the 1Q2012. Sandia Labs’ MegaDroid project simulates 300,000 Android phones to fight wireless catastrophes (video)

German court rules that Motorola, Samsung don’t violate Apple touch event patent

Motorola and Samsung just caught a break from the law after a few hard knocks . A Mannheim, Germany court has ruled that neither company infringes on an Apple patent covering how an OS responds to and ignores touch events. ComScore: Android tops 52 percent of US smartphone share, iPhone cracks the 33 percent mark

Garmin, Navigon GPS apps now consider mass transit, remember where we parked

Third-party navigation apps still tend to fall apart when the keys are out of the ignition — try to cut back on car use and you’re often kicked over to another app with its own set of rules. Both Garmin’s StreetPilot Onboard app and its Navigon equivalent are getting a much more holistic experience through respective upgrades due this fall.
